With its iconic Space Needle, renovated dock area and harbourside hangouts, Seattle has plenty of things to see and do. The city feels almost restless constantly innovating and looking to the future, Seattle is known for being cool and edgy with a friendly vibe. Seattle is known as the Emerald City, perched on the water and surrounded by beautiful evergreen forests. If you’re planning to park up on Sunday evenings you’ll likely be able to find on-street parking. Pay-and-display metered parking in the city can be higher than in other areas, but you’ll find numerous garages and lots for longer-stay parking. One of the most pleasant drives in the area is Route 99, which initially stays close to the west coast of Seattle then proceeds roughly through the middle, cutting Woodland Park in half. The limit drops significantly in urban and residential areas, especially around school zones. Speed limits are well signposted in and around the city of Seattle, with a top speed on Washington State highways of 70mph (112km/h). The other interstate serving Seattle is the I-90, which runs across Mercer Island and inland, past Cougar, Squak and Tiger Mountains, one of the most scenic interstates in this corner of the US and one that will take you all the way to the far east coast. The same interstate is handy if you’re planning on visiting a variety of other popular destinations – heading south-west to Olympia and Tacoma or north to the Canadian border, there’s something exciting to see on either end of this road.
Seattle-Tacoma Airport is just a 20-minute drive from the city along the I-5 interstate. It’s also worth planning your journey to avoid rush hour, when the roads can become quite congested. Be aware that Seattle is a city known for regular rain showers, so make sure to leave extra space between your car and the one in front if you’re hit with a flash downpour. The road network here is easy to navigate, and it’s well-maintained too.
